When you first start off trying to solve a problem, the first solutions you come up with are very complex, and most people stop there. But if you keep going, and live with the problem and peel more layers of the onion off, you can often times arrive at some very elegant and simple solutions. Most people just don’t put in the time or energy to get there.

It makes me so happy. To be at the beginning again, knowing almost nothing... The ordinary-sized stuff which is our lives, the things people write poetry about -- clouds -- daffodils -- waterfalls... these things are full of mystery, as mysterious to us as the heavens were to the Greeks...It's the best possible time to be alive, when almost everything you thought you knew is wrong.

There is almost certainly an evolutionary drive toward increasing complexity in the face of entropy. That’s practically a definition of life. Technology is so powerful and attractive to us because it holds the promise of greater complexity and greater connectedness. Atoms to molecules to cells to organelles to organisms. What’s next? No one knows for sure, but it sure ain’t Facebook.
