It Begins With You
“Imagine a world where people always do what they say they will do. They follow through, they communicate ahead of time if something gets in the way, and don't make promises they can't keep. Are you one of those people? The world is what you make it.”

Poetry in Business
“Concise communication has many applications. Poetry elicits emotion and beauty in as few words as possible. Ad copywriting elicits emotion and action. System action plans elicit clarity and competence. Saying more with less is a skill and art that applies everywhere. Practice it.”

The Epidemic Brand Error
“The flaw most businesses make when defining their brand is thinking too much in terms of how they want to be seen rather than expressing who they already are. The result is a thin layer of corporate image rather than real depth. This is usually a reflection of an owner who doesn't know themselves well enough, or one who is afraid that who they are won't be accepted by others.”

Productive Outrage
“Sometimes outrage is the first step in innovation. Not outrage at some-one, outrage at some-thing. Productive outrage says, "This is ridiculous. There's got to be a better way." There's nothing wrong with frustration and outrage. It means you care. The issue is what you do with that feeling. You have the choice every moment to channel the energy into a solution or blame others for making you feel frustrated. ”

Fear and Leadership
“Looking at how, and more importantly, why you avoid things is one of the disciplines of a leader. By definition, leaders forge into the unknown. By default, the unknown makes us uncomfortable. By choice, we can play victim to the discomfort and avoid, or we can courageously face the fear and lead. Real leadership is leading yourself into your own fear in order to do what needs to be done.”

The Intangibles Create the Tangibles: Intangible indicators: morale, systemization, customer satisfaction, reputation, etc. create the tangible indicators like dollars that people love to count. Many leaders focus on trying to change the tangible indicators without attention to the intangibles. Money is only ever a way of keeping score. Technicians, with their discomfort of the unknown, tend to focus only on what can be easily counted and so avoid the most important and challenging managerial work.

What's Your Motive?
“Extraordinary people are driven by their self-interested desire for learning, growth and self-defined excellence. Ordinary people do the minimum to get by and are driven by others' approval. The irony is that you will often get the most approval when you give up needing it from others and follow your own passion. Only insecurity craves approval or recognition.”

Marketers have long known that people make decisions emotionally before logic comes to bear. Managers are slower on the uptake and still don't enough appreciate how care is always a pre-requisite for competence. Why should your employees want to do their best for your company? If you don't have a concise and meaningful answer based in your employees' self-interest, you're not yet leading and have no right to complain about your people.
