Samuel Smiles, the eldest of eleven children, was born on 23rd December, 1812. He went to Edinburgh University, following which he graduated in 1832 and found work as a doctor in Haddington in Scotland. He became the Editor of the Leeds Times in 1837 after his contributions on parliamentary reform.In 1837. His book on self improvement called Self help was published in 1859.
